In keeping with my Hoboken nostalgia, I have pulled some of my favorite Hoboken photographs that I took from my weekly walks in town. Hoboken, NJ gave a lot to me and in looking at these photos I feel those heart strings tugging. It's only been months since I have moved, and yet as much as I love where I live now, nothing will replace the spot in my heart that I hold for this town.
Of course seeing shows at Maxwell's goes without saying. I started going to shows there over 2 decades ago and continue to do so today. What kind of Indie/Hard core kid would I be if I hadn't scrimped 10 bucks together to go to a show at Maxwells?!

Every week I made a point of going for a walk. Whether it was for 5 minutes or 5 hours, these walks connected me further with my surroundings.
One of my favorite places to go was pier A or "the backyard" down by the Hudson River. I can do without the bikinis in the warm weather, but the view is absolutely breathtaking. I never wanted to take for granted that amazing view of the NYC skyline. Sinatra drive provides a friendly walk along the Hudson sharing both the beauty of the Hoboken water edge, and the line of buildings across the river. This view, stunning both day and night, was something I photographed often. I know I am not alone in this trend and certainly do not boast to have captured the best... (though I think my photos are pretty darn awesome!).

These walks I took brought me to appreciate the beauty of City Hall, Castle Point by Stevens Tech (Of course), Hoboken train and ferry Terminal, even the old Koven Stove works that is slowly being transformed into luxury apartments.
The walks also inspired me to bring my camera with me more often when I went to work. My drive to the high school were I taught art, provided me with a great view of the skyline as well. Specifically the Empire State Building. That series is in another post here on my website.

In the above set of photos you will see the remains of a building. This is the building that used to house "Koven Stove". In the 19th and 20th centuries, they made stoves here, and then afterwards it was used as storage for a book distributor. When driving up Paterson Plank road in Hoboken up to Jersey city Heights, this long brick building is a familiar site. It used to boast signs for "bookbinding" as well as a puppy adoption.
I passed it everyday on my way to work, as well as on my way back. It was interesting to see the building go from an abandoned brick warehouse to a brick facade as they gutted it. Then I noticed all the graffiti on the inside. It was like a time capsule into the late 70's and 80's had been opened. Ironically I was introducing graffiti to my art students in the urban school where I worked. So this was like a gold mine of visuals for me.
now this vacant building is no longer so vacant. It is the future home of "The Cliffs". Soon 128 housing units will be present here, along with about 90 parking spaces.

The very end of May found me in Ireland again. This time the trip was made with my two sisters and myself. We had such an amazing time, as only one can when visiting Ireland, and it of course lent itself to some great photo opportunities for Tiger-Fly. As I continue to go through the almost 2000 photos I have taken, please enjoy a glimpse of what I was able to capture.
Of course, as I was capturing the scenery, Ireland was capturing my heart.... again.

Since I was a little girl the rhyme "Mary had a little lamb" has followed me (my name of course, being Mary). Because of this, I naturally have affection for sheep, particularly ones with little black faces.
This past July found me once again in England this time visiting friends and family. As we drove through the country side I was once again enamored with sheep. The lush green grass and the onslaught of an afternoon rain provided the perfect backdrop to these gentle creatures.

This is an example of my house drawings available for commission.

I have included the photo that was given to me of the Maserio house. Along with my finished Pen and ink drawing which you can see has some charming details and snow. (The drawing was then used for her Christmas cards!)

I have also done drawings of houses that are more true to life (as per request) or added some "landscaping". I also draw schools, churches, summer cottages, etc.

General turn around time is 1-2 weeks depending on my work load.

If interested in a drawing of your home, beach house, school, church etc. please contact me either via email or phone. We start with a 15 min. meeting in person, or phone, to put together what you are looking for and "draw" up an order. Preferably I ask for a photo(s) and will also make a visit or two to the house (if able) to get a true read on the structure.

There are some different options available to you.
1. Finished pen and ink drawing in a size of your choice
2. Finished pen and ink drawing, hand colored in colored pencil/watercolor
3. the above ...matted
4. the above matted and framed
5. the above and assistance in working with a printer to create note cards as well as the original drawing (matted/framed) for your home.

These are just a few glimpses of my new "stomping grounds". I have recently moved to Denville, NJ in Morris County. What better way to get to know your neighborhood, then to take long walks and broaden my nature photography and Denville photography series!
I have to say, its beautiful here. Peaceful, warm and welcoming. So far, everyone here is very friendly and its been ages since I had GRASS!!! While yardwork and gardening may seem a daunting task to most, it is something that we have been happily settling into. I will miss city life, but its nice to be able to walk across my own lawn and into my big screened in porch that will be decorated for holidays. "Country mouse" has turned in her "resident parking sticker" and finally come home.

Hoboken Fountain

Hoboken was "home" to me for almost 5 years. Even before that, there were many days, nights... even weekends, that I spent in Hoboken. The running joke in my family is that my Aunts and Uncles spent their youth trying to get out of Hoboken. My cousins, friends and I spend our youth trying to get in. But even with the high rent and the crooked politics, it still feels like home.
These are some shots that I took on an unusually hot day in May. Once that fountain is turned on, there's no stopping the screeching kids from running in and out of the streams of water. In and out, over and over. I remember running through sprinklers when I was a kid, its such a thrill to feel the cold water drip down your back. I envied these kids who were able to shed their clothes with abandon and just run through the freezing cold water. Yet, at the same time... I didnt join them.. instead... I walked down the street to my favorite bar. Sometimes grown ups have to find other ways to cool off!
